Call for papers 4th Prof. Jan Winiecki International Scientific Conference

University of Gdańsk, University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), and the Association of Polish Economist (TEP) invite submissions to a scientific conference themed:

 

“A Changing World: Challenges for Economics and Economies”.

 

This is the fourth conference (the second international), which aims to commemorate Prof. Jan Winiecki and promote the exchange of ideas and research findings on societies’ coping strategies and resilience with respect to economic shocks and transformation processes (in the broadest sense) and the mitigating role of institutions.

Invited are contributions from all fields of economics as well as from interdisciplinary research collaborations between related fields of the following thematic blocks:

Dr Markus Kitzmuller

World Bank, Lead Country Economist for the European Union

Dr Markus Kitzmuller is Lead Country Economist for the European Union. He previously was Acting Practice Manager, Macroeconomics, Trade, and Investment (MTI) Global Practice, Prosperity Program Leader, Lead and Senior Country Economist across Western and Central Africa, overseeing complex, innovative Development Policy Financing operations. Markus has led and overseen the preparation of (macro-fiscal-growth and micro) economic analyses across regions including Europe, Africa, and South Asia, and, at the South Asia Chief Economist Office, conceived and spearheaded the regional South Asia Economic Focus. As a Young Professional, he focused on Competition Policy in Tunisia, Kenya, and Turkey. Markus holds a PhD in Economics from the European University Institute, and degrees from the College of Europe (Bruges), the University of Innsbruck and LSE. He was a postdoctoral fellow at University of Michigan, a Visiting Scholar at University of Chicago and worked in the European Commission. His research at the cutting edge between micro and macroeconomics has been published in academic and policy journals.

 

Prof. Dr Michael Bucksteeg

Faculty of Business and Economics FernUniversität in Hagen

Michael Bucksteeg is Assistant Professor of Business Management and Energy Economics at FernUniversität in Hagen and Research Scientist at the Institute of Energy Economics at the University of Cologne. Building on his doctoral training in energy economics and finance, he gained practical policy experience as a Regulatory Expert at a transmission system operator, working at the interface between Berlin and Brussels. His research integrates behavioral economics and large-scale energy system modeling, with a focus on renewable integration, electricity market design, consumer behavior, and the solar rebound effect. He has published in leading international journals, including Nature Energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Energy Policy, and Energy Economics, and his work combines empirical methods and open-source modeling to inform cost-efficient and socially robust energy transition policies.

About the conference

Professor Jan Winiecki (died in 2016) was a highly respected economist in Poland and abroad, known for his rich academic output and views in the spirit of classical liberalism. He was also a valued academic teacher, highly regarded by his students. Professor Winiecki played a prominent role in the political and economic scene during the period of systemic transformation in Poland. Additionally, he was a talented economic publicist and a dedicated social activist. He co-founded TEP – the Society of Polish Economists and the Adam Smith Centre.

To commemorate and promote Professor Winiecki’s thoughts and achievements, the University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszów, the Association of Polish Economists, and the University of Gdańsk, institutions closely associated with this remarkable economist, initiated an annual All-Polish Academic Conference named after him. The inaugural edition of the conference took place on November 26-27, 2020, in Sopot/Warsaw.”
